Dear Teachers, Students and Rasikas,

Carnatica Archival Center for Music, Texas, brings to you the third edition of IND-US Fest on April 23rd 2016, Saturday, a day long Indian Arts mela featuring artists from India and local talents. This year, we are celebrating the centenary year of MS Amma and this festival will be dedicated to the nightingale of Carnatic music, Barat Ratna M.S.Subbulakshmi.

Entry fee for Rasikas and non-participants: $20 which includes all day access to the programs (including feature concerts in the evening by popular artists from India).

No entry fee for participants.
Entry fee for parents and siblings of participants - $10.

This year:

  • We will have competitions judged by stalwarts like the Carnatica Brothers – Shri. K.N.Shashikiran, Chitravina Shri. P.Ganesh and other celebrity artists. The competitions will have thematic categories to mark the centenary celebrations of MS amma.
  • Simultaneously, there will be individual and group performances by local talents. We invite local schools to present thematic performances to celebrate with us.
  • To honor the legend, Barat Ratna M.S. Subbulakshmi, we are planning to have a MSS Bakthi Symphony featuring some simple krithis and devotional songs popularized by the Queen of Carnatic Music. This is based on the Carnatic Symphony program premiered to rave reviews in Cleveland, conceptualized and conducted by Kalaimamani Vidwan Shri. K.N.Shashikiran.

We invite local schools to participate in this symphony group choir and offer respects to the legend. Please email carnaticatexas@gmail.com if you would like to participate. We will send you the song list and recordings to learn from.

Participation certificates will be awarded to all participants registering for competitions.

Stage Performances (Vocal/ Instrumental/ Dance):

We invite the dance and music schools of the DFW community to participate in 20 minutes group performance slots. This is a non-competitive category show casing the talents of upcoming artists. The performances could cover any composition of your choice or could be a thematic performance choosing compositions of a particular composer, about a diety or kshethra. Schools can request for multiple slots. Participation fees for a group will be as follows:

1. $25 per participant for a group of 6 members or above, per slot.
2. For groups with up to 5 members, $150 per school, per slot.

To request for a group performance slot, please email us at carnaticatexas@gmail.com and we will confirm your slot/ timing on a first come first serve basis, after review by the committee. Once you receive a confirmation from us, you will receive instructions on how to make the payment via paypal. The timings will be allocated by the Carnatica Team and the selected group must be willing to perform at the allocated time.

MSS Carnatic Bakthi Symphony A Tribute To The Legend:

The participation fee to sing in this group symphony is $25 per participant.

For individual performances, please email us and we will accommodate the request for a participation fee based on the response and the concerts lined up.

Competition Guidelines

Age Categories:

 

Sub Junior(SJ) Up to 10 Age represents completed years on or before April 23rd 2016
Junior(J) 11 to 13
Sub Senior(SS) 14 to 17
Senior(S) 18 and above

Participation Fees for Competitions:

Fees will be collected for the amount of $25 per category.  The deadline for submitting your registration forms and payment is April 15th 2016. Spot registrations will be open at the venue for last minute participation for an additional fee of $5 per category on the day of the event. Spot registration will close at 10:30 AM CST.  

  • Register by deadline - $25 per category.
  • Register in the venue (Spot Registration) - $30 per category. 

No refunds will be issued after the registration is completed. No refunds will be issued for no shows on the day of the event.

MSS Thematic Competition Categories – Vocal/ Instrumental/ Group:

Students can participate in the various categories defined for their age group as a vocalist, instrumentalist or as a group performer representing a school/ group.

There are 6 categories for each age group (Sub Junior, Junior, Sub Senior or Senior).

Devotional

Simple bajans, light classical songs on Gods. Need not be pure Carnatic songs.

Simple Songs/Keerthanams

Little Thukkadas and Solo rendition of Kritis/Keerthanams popularized by the queen, of composers like Annamacharya, Purandaradasa, Bhadrachala Ramadasa, Meera, Kabir, Soordas. Thillanas, Padams, and Javalis can also be rendered. Please state the raga, tala, composer and the first few words of the sahithya you will be singing.

Krithis

Any Kriti of any composer popularized by the queen. Provide a choice of 1 krithi to choose from.  Please provide the name of the raga, tala, composer and the sahitya of the krithi.

Shlokas          

Any shloka like Hanuman chalisa, Ganesha Sthuthi, Madhurashtakam, Suprabatham, etc.

Tiny Tots Fancy Dress

Traditional ethnic wear. Dress up like a musician or composer

Multimedia Presentation/ Art work

Any presentation in the form of multimedia, painting, portrayal of any Carnatic based theme on a chart paper. You can be innovative.
Multimedia Contest – Take a composer, raga or a composition and present about it. Or an artist of your choice. 3 – 5 mins.

General Rules:

  • Participants should get their own shruthi box.
  • No accompaniment instruments will be provided.
  • No Restrictions for participation from any states in USA.
  • Age clarification for group performances: All the students in the group should be in the same age category to be eligible to compete in that category. For example, if a school sends a group of  4 to compete in the Sub Junior category, all the 4 students should be less than 10 years as required to compete in the category.
    • Based on number of entries received and performance(s), prizes will be awarded per age category for group performances.
  • Registration details will be provided soon. There will be spot registration open for last minute registration in the venue with an extra charge of $5, in addition to the $25 fee for the category.  I.e. After the deadline, the fee per category will be $30. Spot registration will be open till 10:30 AM CST.         
  • A strict time limit as defined for the categories will be imposed. A buzzer will signal the conclusion of the allotted time. The judges may also request the contestant to stop before the allotted time.
  • The decision of the judges is final and binding.
  • For instrumentalists, vocalists and group participation, the same guidelines apply for the competition category.
  • Group, Vocal and instrumental will be judged as separate streams.
  • For instrumentalists, knowing the words and having the ability to render the lyrics is an added advantage.
  • No refunds will be issued after the registration is completed. No refunds will be issued for no shows on the day of the event.
  • Contestant must bring the following proof of registration:
    • A copy of the Confirmation Email sent after registration is complete.
    • Paypal receipt for the registration payment.
